Rubavu District is in Rwanda’s Western Province, right by Lake Kivu and next to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s a place where you can relax by the lake or enjoy the lively feel of the town.
People come here for the beautiful views, the fun spots along the shore, and the busy markets. Rubavu is also an important link for trade with Congo, giving it a unique mix of cultures and activities.

Kinyarwanda is the official language. French, Swahili, and English are also widely spoken, especially in urban areas.
Rubavu District has a population of more than 500,000 making it one of the largest areas outside Kigali. Spanning about 388 square kilometers, it combines vibrant city life with easy access to rural landscapes and cross-border trade with the DRC.
Getting to Rubavu from Kigali is easy and full of nice views. By car, it takes about 3 hours on a smooth road, and along the way, you’ll pass green hills, small villages, and people going about their day. The drive is comfortable, and there’s always something interesting to see out the window.
If you want to take a bus, you can start at Nyabugogo, the main bus station in Kigali. Buses go to Rubavu throughout the day, with express companies like Volcano and Kivu Belt offering trips every few hours. The buses are comfortable, and the drivers know the road well, making it an affordable and reliable choice.
For those who like a bit more comfort, renting a car is another option. You can rent a car and drive yourself or hire a driver to take you there. Having a driver means you don’t need to worry about directions or traffic; you can simply enjoy the ride. It’s a good choice for people who want a bit more privacy and don’t want to stick to bus schedules.
For a faster and more unique experience, you can travel by helicopter with Akagera Aviation. This luxury option gets you to Rubavu quickly and gives you a great view of Rwanda from above. It’s a special way to travel, perfect for those who want comfort and an exciting view along the way.
Rwandan Franc (RWF) is the official currency. Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants.
Rubavu’s weather is known for being cooler and more refreshing than Kigali and many other parts of Rwanda. During the day, temperatures in Rubavu can go up to around 25°C (77°F), while nights and early mornings are cooler, often dropping to about 15°C (59°F).
Rubavu has two main seasons. The wet season runs from March to May and October to December, bringing heavy rain and lush greenery. Temperatures during this season range between 16°C to 22°C (61°F to 72°F). Rain can sometimes be intense, so it’s good to pack a raincoat and waterproof shoes if you’re visiting during these months.
The dry season stretches from June to September and January to February. This is the cooler season, with temperatures from 14°C to 24°C (57°F to 75°F), making it a comfortable time for outdoor activities. Many visitors prefer the dry season since it’s easier to explore without worrying about sudden rain showers.
Since the weather in Rubavu can be a bit unpredictable, it’s helpful to carry light layers, an umbrella, and some rain protection, even if you visit during the dry season.
